BODY SENSATION INNER & OUTER FOCUS

When we are with others or out in the world, our attention is usually directed externally, and we can lose touch with our bodies and ourselves. When we're not connected with ourselves, we may react quickly or thoughtlessly especially if we are in a hurry, in a conflict, or facing a challenging situation or conversation and we may regret our actions later. At these times, we are not centred in our bodies. With practice, we can learn to stay connected to and pres-ent with our body sensations as we engage with the world, even under challenging circumstances.

Here's how:

•Several times a day, remember to tune in to your body.

•See if you can find one or two words that describe the sensation(s) in your body: achy, energised, relaxed, tense, buzzy, or something else.

•Then notice your surroundings and what is occurring in the environment.

•Try oscillating your attention between what is going on in the environment and what is going on inside your body. Go back and forth between inner and outer focus several times.

•The next time you have a difficult conversation, stay centred by oscillating your attention in this way, and find a few words to describe your sensation.

•Throughout the day, practice bringing your attention momentarily to your body sensation, then back to your surroundings. How does this practice change your experience?
